Although recliners have been around for many years much has changed.

Comfort has always been the first goal of the manufacturer.  However style conscious shoppers have demanded more and the industry has responded.

Today many recliners are indistinguishable from a stationary upholstered chair. Another big change is that recliners are now built into sofas, sectionals, and loveseats as well.

You may have heard the term “Motion Furniture”. The industry refers to sofas, sectionals, and loveseats with built in recliners as motion furniture to distinguish them from a chair because the word “recliner” evokes an image of just a chair for most people.

There are a host of additional names attributed to various Recliners and fabrics.

For example:
Microfiber: Also referred to as Micro-Suede. This is a synthetic fabric made to look and feel like real suede. The big difference is in how it wears and how easy the fabric is to maintain. So you get the look of Suede with out the challenges inherent in maintaining it.
Chaise Recliner:
A chair that when reclined has no gap between the seat and the footrest.
Push Back Recliner: Also known as a “High Leg” recliner.  A chair that does not have a recline handle but reclines by leaning or pushing back in the seat.  A push back recliner does not rock and is great for small spaces.
Swivel Recliner:
A chair with a mechanism allowing it to recline as well as turn or swivel.
Glider Recliner:
A chair with a mechanism allowing it to recline & glide back & forth.
Rocker Recliner:
A chair that both reclines and rocks.
Euro Recliner: A recliner with modern European styling featuring a separate chair and ottoman.
Massage Recliner:
A chair that reclines and has massage motors, up to ten massage motors or more.
Big Man’s Recliner:
A chair specially built for the demands of tall or very heavy people.
Ladies Recliner:
Also referred to as a “Petite Recliner”. A chair built for the comfort of smaller or lighter framed people who find large recliners uncomfortable.
Chair & A Half:
As the name sounds, is an extra wide chair.
Lift Recliners:
Also Referred to as “Orthopedic Lift Chairs”. A chair designed for the elderly or disabled with an electronic mechanism that allows the chair to lift a person from a reclined or seated position to a standing position at the push of a button.
Wall Saver Recliner:
Also referred to as a “wall recliner”. This chair has a mechanism allowing the seat to slide forward so the back doesn’t recline as far keeping it away from the wall, thus “saving” the wall. This chair does not rock and is great for smaller spaces.

One may also choose a combination such as a swivel rocker recliner or a swivel glider recliner. Reclining Sofas, Loveseats and Sectionals sometimes come with rocking mechanisms, massage mechanisms, or electronic reclining mechanisms.
